‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-offs: WTF? Do We Really Need Them?

Okay, so HBO just announced fans of their mothership, Game of Thrones might get up to four spin-offs once the epic tits and dragons show retires next year. Yes, you read that right: four spin-offs. And I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that.

HBO have stated that they want to cash in on the Game of Thrones money-making experience “explore different time periods of George R. R. Martin’s vast and rich universe.”

Yes, I know it is HBO and when they do something, they usually do it well (let’s not mention Season 2 of True Blood, okay?), but, seriously, guys?! I know HBO is not the premiere subscription provider it used to be, but they are still dishing out some pretty amazing stuff. Considering their foray into the sci-fi robot-fucking world of Westworld, I would think they have their new cash cow set up just nicely. And, to be honest, Westworld probably lends itself more to spin-offs than Game of Thrones. After all, as fans saw in the finale, Westworld is not the only theme park in the garden. Seriously, could you imagine the spin-offs available to Westworld? Especially now Maeve is crossing the fourth wall in regard to her consciousness? Plus, HBO could basically cater to ever whim and fancy of its viewers. Like Game of Thrones? Why not try Westworld: Tits and Dragons? Liked Big Love? Why not try Westworld: I Married My Sister And Liked It. Are you still missing True Blood? Then Westworld: Hot Vampire And Fairy Vagina is just for you!

As the Sydney Morning Herald points out, viewers may not get to see all four spin-offs, that only a couple are likely to see the light of day, that’s still a lot of cash-grabbing going on.

Although, to be fair, HBO have stated they will give the writers all the time they need in regard to the new spin-offs.

“We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”

Now, to be honest, if HBO can pull this off, the spin-offs have the chance to be magnificent. We know they will be visually stunning on HBO as well as needlessly explicit (which is exactly what we want). After all, there are plenty of characters within Game of Thrones that could be expanded on. Considering how many characters George R. R. Martin likes to create so he has plenty of back up when he goes on a killing rampage in his novels, there are still some characters remaining in Westeros that could be considered for exploration.

Remember Gendry? Perhaps HBO could dedicate a series to what the fuck actually happened to him after we saw him row off in a boat in Season 3. Or, maybe HBO could consider following the path Arya’s hound, Nymeria. They could both meet up again in the final season of Game of Thrones and then the pair could roam around Westeros in their spin-off. Arya could kill people and Nymeria could just tag along to clean up the mess.

But would people actually tune into these spin-offs? Will they ever be as rich and all-encompassing as the original Game of Thrones series is?

Although, if HBO were to just put Tyrion and Varys is bar and had them tell dick jokes for an entire season, I’d watch the hell out of that!
